Additional extra services

Rather than heading to the emergency department for treatment, Lostwithiel Medical Practice provides minor injury clinics through our daily triage system.

In addtion, there are minor injury units and urgent care centres open throughout Cornwall (Penzance, Bodmin, Lizkeard, Camborne, etc) some of which are open 24-hours a day.

The primary care centre at Camborne Redruth community hospital is open from 8am to 10pm, Monday to Friday.   Details of the range of services, including opening times, are published online at www.kernowccg.nhs.uk and www.royalcornwall.nhs.uk/staywell

Pharmacists can give confidential expert advice and treatment for a range of common illnesses and complaints, such as allergies, minor cuts, bruises and skin conditions. They can also arrange an urgent prescription for a supply of any prescribed medicines that run out, so you don’t have to use the out of hours’ service or the emergency department. This service is also available for anyone who’s on holiday or visiting family during Christmas and new year. NHS Kernow’s head of prescribing, Georgina Praed, shares some advice on how to treat common ailments at  https://soundcloud.com/kernow-ccg/coughs-and-colds

NHS 111 also provides 24-hour expert non-emergency medical help, including when your GP surgery is closed. It’s free to call from landlines and mobile phones and is staffed by fully-trained advisors and experienced clinicians.

If you do need to visit the emergency department, a minor injury unit or urgent care centre during the holiday, you can see how long you may have to wait by using the online waiting time service, which shows the longest wait, how many people are waiting to be seen and how many people are in the department. It also includes opening times and x-ray availability. Visit: www.kernowccg.nhs.uk/get-info/choose-well/ed-and-miu-waiting-times for details of services in Cornwall and Devon or  the new NHS Quicker app, which can be downloaded for free from the App store: https://nhsquicker.co.uk/app/ (this link will open in a new window – popups must be allowed)
